Abstract

Rachel Ann Brune (b. 1978), of Point Pleasant, New Jersey, served as a journalist and an officer in the Military Police (MP) in the United States Army from 2001-2014 and joined the United States Army Reserves in 2015.

Collection contains copies of many articles written by Brune for various military publications and civilian newspapers during her deployments to Iraq from 2003 - 2006. Collection also includes personal correspondence from 2002-2010, publications in which her articles appeared, notebooks from her career as a journalist and MP officer, a compact disc of photographs taken while deployed, a book of poetry and reminiscences, a 2015 oral history, and artifacts.

Scope and Contents of the Materials

The Rachel Ann Brune Papers contain information covering her enlistment in the U. S. Army after the events of 11 September, 2001 and her career as a journalist and military police officer (MP) spanning the years of 2002-2010. The majority of the material spans the years 2002 to 2006 when she served as a journalist, editor, and photographer for military publications. Collection includes clippings of articles and photographs from military and civilian publications from 2003 -2006, personal correspondence from 2002-2010, publications in which her articles appeared, notebooks concerning her career as a journalist and MP officer, a compact disc of photographs taken while deployed, a book of poetry and reminiscences, an oral history, and artifacts.

Collection Historical Note

Rachel Ann Brune was born 19 March, 1978 in Point Pleasant, New Jersey. She graduated from the New York University Tisch School of the Arts in May 2000. Following the events of 11 September, 2001, she enlisted in the United States Army. She served as 46Q (Print Journalist) with the Military Police Corps. She was stationed at Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) Camp Arifjan , Kuwait from February, 2003 to July, 2003, and then Camp Victory Baghdad until March, 2004. Brune then served stateside at Fort Totten, New York until March 2005, and then was assigned to Fort Campbell, Kentucky. In August, 2005, she redeployed to Iraq and was stationed at Forward Operating Base (FOB) Q-West until August, 2006.

While stationed overseas, she edited, wrote and took pictures for the MP Times from 2003 to 2004. From 2003 to 2006, she contributed to other military publications such as Coalition Scimitar, Desert Voice, Anaconda Times, and Liberty Torch Magazine. From 2005 to 2006, she wrote the column "Dispatches from the Front" that was published in the civilian New Jersey newspapers Advertiser News North and Advertiser News South. In 2006, she was selected to photograph the Hatra archaeological site for the Hatra Project.

After her second overseas tour, Brune attended graduate school at the University at Albany in New York, where she earned her master's degree in communication in 2008. She also earned her commission as a second lieutenant in the Military Police Corps (MP). From July, 2010 to December, 2010, she was served a deployment at Camp Victory, Iraq. In 2011, Brune enrolled in the U.S. Army Military Police Captains Career Course in Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri and achieved the rank of captain.

Brune continued to write and publish short fiction. She self-published Echoes and Premonitions, a book of poetry, reminiscences and thoughts concerning her time in the military. She released her first novel, Soft Target, in early 2013 and her second, Cold Run, in late 2014. Brune wrote about reading and the writing life at http://infamous-scribbler.com/blog/. She wrote articles about military and popular culture for www.taskandpurpose.com. In 2015, Brune joined the United States Army Reserves and resides Fayetteville, North Carolina.
