North Carolina Association of Family and Consumer Sciences | Martha Blakeney Hodges Special Collections and University Archives

Name: North Carolina Association of Family and Consumer Sciences

Historical Note:

The North Carolina Association of Family & Consumer Sciences (NCAFCS) was originally founded in 1917 as the North Carolina Home Economics Association (NCHEA) and achieved formal status in 1919. In 1922, the NCHEA became an offical state member affiliate of the American Home Economics Association (AHEA). In 1994, the North Carolina Home Economics Association changed to their current name, the North Carolina Association of Family & Consumer Sciences following the official name change of the AHEA to the American Association of Family & Consumer Sciences (AAFCS).

The NCAFCS held their 100th Annual Meeting in March 2018 and continue to promote the education, research, and programs in line with the AAFCS to further the education and science in the family and consumer sciences field. The NCAFCS multiple programs and projects center around consumerism, finanical literacy, children and family health and well-being and nutrition. Additionally, the NCAFCS mission is to "provide leadership and support for professionals whose work assists individuals, families, and communities in making informed decisions about their well-being, relationships and resources to achieve optimal quality of life." - NCAFCS 2015 revised Bylaws http://ncafcs.org/handbook-bylaws/
